US Capitol

The US Capitol was imposing from the moment it was conceived, as that was a prominent goal for all the DC government structures. After several renovations and restorations, the Capitol remains imposing, visually stunning, and unequaled in architectural splendor. It’s the best-known workplace in US history, and a perfect choice for group tours and other travel to Washington DC.

Though impossible to point out all the splendid detail within, your Capitol Hill guide will point out many of the building’s greatest highlights. Certainly you’ll stand in the rotunda beneath the prominent Capitol dome. You’ll learn about the whisper spot and discover all kinds of US history in the paintings around you. Throughout the Capitol you’ll marvel at the high ceilings, intricate tile, detailed murals, beautiful columns, and spacious halls.

Prominent spaces in the Capitol offer insights into history as well as current events. Of course, the most thrilling aspect of any tour is a visit to the third floor galleries from which the Senate and the House of Representatives can be viewed. This feature is not available every day, of course, and fortunately the Capitol still has much to offer.

Having moved several times in Capitol history, the Senate and House of Representatives each have refurbished chambers where they used to reside. The former Senate Chamber is a beautiful museum space. The former House of Representatives has been commissioned as a statuary for the statues acquired from every state, depicting memorable residents from each. These statues, of course, are spread throughout the rest of the Capitol as well.

You’ll also see time stand still in the Old Supreme Court, the top of the judicial branch having been housed in the Capitol until the 1930s when it finally received a home of its own.

Tours of Capitol Hill can be done with audio equipment for large groups, such as those on class trips and other educational tours. For a more personal experience, meetings can be arranged with your member of congress. We have more details about this feature when you call for an expert guide.
